Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common bacterial infections that can affect any part of the urinary system, including the bladder, urethra, ureters, and kidneys. While UTIs are more common in women, men can also get them. In some cases, a man can transmit bacteria to a woman during sex, which can lead to a UTI in the woman.
The bacteria that cause UTIs are typically found in the intestines. During sex, these bacteria can be transferred from a man’s penis to a woman’s vagina and urethra. From there, the bacteria can travel up the urethra and into the bladder, where they can cause an infection. UTIs can also be caused by other factors, such as poor hygiene, using harsh soaps or douches, and holding urine for long periods of time.
